Monuments — Crosses & sculptures

The carved half
of memorial work.

Crosses and figures — the pieces that are shaped rather than cut square. Machines rough them out; the faces, hands and ornament are finished by our own carvers, because that is the part that decides whether a piece reads at all.

How much of it
is cut by hand.

This is the line that decides the price, and the one enquiries almost always leave out. Four levels — tell us which one the drawing expects.

Plain cut Worked byMachine only Profile cut and polished, no carved detail. The fastest and cheapest route.
Outline carved Worked byMachine + hand Pattern cut into the face. Reads from a distance, costs a fraction of relief.
Relief carved Worked byMostly hand Ground back around the ornament so it stands proud and throws a shadow.
Carved in the round Worked byHand throughout A figure worked on every face. The slowest work we do, and the only part no machine finishes.

Going deeper on either side: Orthodox crosses covers bar proportions and the foot angle; sculptures & statues covers scale, references and progress proofs. Both pages price from the same four levels.

Stone is subtractive.
So the proof comes first.

There is no putting it back, which is why the block carries an allowance on every face and nothing is roughed out before the study is agreed.

ReferencePhotographs from several angles, a drawing, a maquette or a 3D file. Two views are never enough for a face — send four if you can.
ProportionsCross bar lengths, ring diameter and foot angle confirmed on the drawing before cutting, and held across repeat orders.
StructureCut whole where the block allows. Where it does not, joints are dowelled and hidden on the back face.
FinishFaces and hands often honed while drapery stays matt, so the light behaves the way the sculptor intended.
FixingDowelled to the base or plinth with stainless pins; lifting points marked on the crate for larger figures.
PackingBraced inside a crate built around the piece, extremities boxed separately — arms and wings are where transit damage starts.
