Russia & CIS — Khachkars

Khachkars,
carved not printed.

A khachkar is a carved cross-stone — the cross rising from a rosette, framed by interlace that has to be cut by hand to read properly. We produce them for Armenian communities, churches and monument dealers across Russia, the CIS and the diaspora.

How deep
the carving goes.

This is the line item that decides the price, and the one most enquiries leave out. The sections below are what we mean by each term — tell us which one your drawing expects.

Engraved lineCut into the face, no material removed around it
Shallow reliefGround back a few millimetres so the cross stands proud
Deep reliefCut back further, giving a real shadow line around the ornament
PiercedCarved right through the slab where the pattern allows it

Drawing to crate,
by our own carvers.

Machines rough the stone out. The interlace, the rosette and the edges are finished by hand — that is the part no CNC file gets right on its own.

SizesCemetery pieces commonly 1000–1600 mm tall, church and memorial khachkars larger. Thickness matters more than height — deep relief needs the material to cut into.
OrnamentWork from your own drawing, a photograph of an existing khachkar, or our patterns. Proof drawings returned before any stone is cut.
InscriptionArmenian and Cyrillic lettering, engraved or sandblasted, painted or gilded. Fonts matched to the sheet you send.
MountingStepped pedestals, dowelled bases, or drilled and rebated for wall fixing with stainless anchors.
Repeat workThe template stays on file, so a second khachkar for the same family matches the first years later.
PackingCarved faces boarded, corners boxed, crates built for the road leg after the port — relief edges are where transit damage starts.
